Using Reed Diffusers In Your Home

By Susan Cooper

Coming back home after a long absence and walking into an entryway filled with the warm and inviting smell of cinnamon provided by your diffusers sounds like a wonderful homecoming. The benefits of using reed diffusers in your home are obvious as they are functional, imparting wonderful fragrances, as well as decorative and attractive.

Using a diffuser instead of burning a candle or incense is somewhat safer as the fire risk is removed. The variety of fragrance and fragrance combination choices is enormous, with options to suit every room in the house, from the entry hall to the basement. Some people might opt for a simple, elegant floral scent, while others would select a citrus and coconut combination to remind them of an exotic holiday location. Each room could have a different fragrance if you so choose.

The size and style of diffuser chosen depending on individual needs and taste and they can be found in most stores. You should easily find something that will match your room decor. There is also a vast array of scents and fragrances to choose from, allowing you to match the room and your preferences.

The diffuser will always be made up of a small, decorative glass bottle, rattan reeds and the scented oil. Most of the time the glass bottle will already have perfumed oil in it, leaving you to uncork it and stand the reeds in your chosen. If your oil was bought separately, you'd fill the bottle and store the spare oil in a cupboard away from sunlight.

You will need to remove the cork from the bottleneck and carefully pour the oil in. Insert the reeds into the vessel. Once they've absorbed sufficient oil, they will start to emit the fragrance. Place the bottle on a coaster as the oils could damage some surfaces, and make sure it's out of reach of animals and small children.

Keep your glass diffuser bottle on a window ledge, or near an air vent. The movement of the air and gentle breezes will diffuse the chosen fragrant oils through the room and leave you to enjoy a fresh smelling home.

You may notice that the scent lessens over a period. Cautiously turn the reeds the other way around and put them back into the bottle. With time the reeds may also stop diffusing the smell. This could be due to the oil being depleted or the reeds being clogged or dusty. Wash the decorative vessel using soapy water. Dry it completely before replenishing the oil and putting new reeds in.

Buy the best quality oils that you can, as the cheaper oils will not give you the best result. Often they will be inferior, using synthetic products and not have the best smells. They will certainly not last as long as you'd want them to. A good quality oil will last for several months, depending on the size of the diffuser bottle you are using, filling your home with delightful smells.
