By Linda Hill

Any outdoor space can become special if you put a little effort in decorating it properly. Most people use different plastic or terracotta pots for their plants, but sometimes you can find much better solutions. Large pots, or containers, with several different plants put together, might create more interesting environment, and it is also easier to maintain them.

If you want to put it all on even higher level, there are some other interesting things you might do. For example, you don't have to use boring plain pots, you can decorate your outdoor space with beautiful mosaic garden planters instead. They look really attractive and bring something special in your garden or any other space you want to decorate with luxurious plants. These plants will look even better in appropriate containers.

Mosaic is probably the best method for decorating terracotta pots, especially large ones. There are different patterns you can use for this purpose, as well as different combinations of colors. All possible shades of grey and brown, or so called earthy and stone colors, are always appropriate solutions for this type of decoration. Small fragments of stones and ceramics are often used, but other durable materials are also welcome.

Ancient motifs are something you simply cannot make a mistake with. Geometrical patterns or mimicking nature, for example, leaves and flowers, is also always a very good idea. Old Greek or Roman motifs are quite popular for this purpose. In any case, this decorating technique successfully transforms plain and boring terracotta containers and makes a great difference.

Mosaic technique mostly uses small, rectangular pieces of stones or ceramics. But, interesting effects can be achieved using irregularly shaped pieces of any durable material, for example, glass. You could also combine different materials. Or, simply take a hammer and some leftover ceramic tiles you keep in your garage, and give it a try.

You can achieve wonderful effects with almost no expenses at all. In fact, this might become a perfect little hobby for the whole family. Some old and unattractive plain terracotta pots may be easily transformed into something unique and special, simply using different leftover tiles and ordinary ceramic tile glue. Combining different materials, for example, inserting a few pieces of glass into ceramic tile made composition might look really effective.

The fact is that most people simply have not enough time or will to make something like this. It doesn't mean that you cannot have similar planters on your terrace or patio. In your nearest garden center you will probably find beautiful containers made using the mosaic technique. If not, try online. Some suppliers offer really interesting decorative containers you will simply adore.

When it comes to colors, there are no particular rules to follow. Earthy and stone colors are always popular choices, in any possible shade. On the other hand, vivid colors may bring more life onto a small balcony, even in those periods of year when there are no blooming plants there. The choice is yours, and combining lovely planters with luxuriously blooming plants, you just cannot make a mistake.
